Clinical application of shockwave therapy in the treatment and management of plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinopathy
The foot and ankle service at Bridgewater trust in Warrington currently see’s 55 patients per week for initial assessment, diagnosis and treatment. A large percentage of these patients present with chronic plantar fasciitis and to a slightly lesser extent Achilles tendinopathy and they have typically been in and around the care pathways for a extensive period, in some instances, years. Having established the foot and ankle service in 2021 the focus was on evidence based approach’s and collaborative working with the MSK/Physio team to ensure successful outcomes and consistency with our patients. Shockwave therapy has provided an integral option to this care plan for both of these conditions, managed alongside a evidence based and crucially up to date treatment plan; long gone are the days of cold water bottle rolling and calf stretching. Data is currently being collected in an internal study relating to shockwave therapy and the effective management of plantar fasciitis, this is an ongoing study at Bridgewater and the results are pending but the aim of this work shop is to share experiences and ideas for the better of our patients.
