Consultant in Musculoskeletal and Sports Radiology

I’m a Consultant Radiologist specialising in musculoskeletal and sports.

I’ve been the personal radiologist to both Manchester premiership football clubs since 2007, and radiologist to Lancashire County cricket club and several rugby clubs. I was only radiologist from the region at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and provided support to the 2012 Olympic teams based in Manchester.

I continue to provide support to British Cycling, British Athletics athletes, the national Taekwondo and ladies netball teams, and multiple other sports professionals including boxers and golfers.

I have a strong team-based approach with sports physicians, orthopaedic surgeons, physiotherapists and podiatrists, and we’re in regular contact with one another directly and via multidisciplinary meetings, to discuss optimal case management and post-procedural therapy for patients.

Joint injection therapies
  • Steroidal joint injections to reduce joint inflammation
  • Hyaluronic acid aids with lubrication of the joint and tendons
  • Dextrose injections for strengthening damaged ligaments
Specialised shoulder injection therapies
  • Shoulder hydrodilatation to relieve stiff painful or frozen shoulders and have successfully performed several thousands
  • Shoulder barbotage to relieve the severe symptoms associated with the buildup of calcium within tendon
  • Suprascapular nerve blocks to relieve rotator cuff tendon related chronic pain
Biological treatments including
  • Autologous conditioned plasma in the treatment of early osteoarthritis
  • Platelet rich plasma therapy (PRP) for the treatment of tendon disease including tendinopathy and tendon tears and refined platelet rich plasma therapy for osteoarthritis
  • Fat derived stem cell treatment

In my NHS practice at the University Hospital of South Manchester, I developed the first comprehensive musculoskeletal ultrasound diagnostic and therapeutic service in Manchester and MR arthrography service, and over the years have performed thousands of these procedures.

I am a Professor at two local universities, holding a honorary professorship at Salford University Manchester School of Health Sciences, and a visiting professorship at Manchester Metropolitan University Department of Health professions in recognition for development and delivery of two successful courses on applied orthopaedic radiology and sports radiology. I have delivered more than a thousand postgraduate and undergraduate lectures and I’ve been recognised internationally by being awarded two Cum Laude awards.
