Sean Savage is a Belfast-based podiatrist specialising in podiatric sports medicine and diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound.

He holds postgraduate qualifications from Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh, Queen Mary University of London and AECC University College, Bournemouth.

His professional experience includes providing podiatric care for Northern Ireland’s senior football team and lecturing nationally and internationally.

Sean also contributes to professional education and mentors podiatrists developing their ultrasound skills.

He is a fellow of The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow.

High Volume Injections for Mid Portion Achilles Tendinopathy using diagnostic Ultrasound

Under ultrasound guidance, saline and local anaesthetic are injected into the tissue plane between the anterior Achilles tendon and Kager’s fat pad. Some protocols include corticosteroid. The proposed mechanism is to disrupt abnormal small blood vessels and accompanying nerve fibres, reducing pain and helping rehabilitation.

The use of Hyaluronic Acid can also be used to separate the Tendon from the Kagars fat pad.

Both techniques and protocols will be discussed with some case studies.
